Area school districts are seeing ups and downs with enrollment for the 2013-14 school year.
Mountain View School District 244, which encompasses schools in Grangeville, Kooskia and Elk City, saw a six student increase from last year.
Riggins’ Salmon River Joint School District 243 dropped seven students from last school year to this one.
Mountain View School District 244
Mountain View School District 244 saw some changes in enrollment this year: For the 2013-14 school year, the district has 1,147 students. This is up from 2012-13’s school year of 1,141 students. In 2010-11, the district had 1,193 students and in 2011-12’s year, 1,179.
The biggest changes are seen at Grangeville Elementary Middle School (grades kindergarten through eighth), which is up 40 students at 507 from last year’s 467 and the year before’s 484. GEMS’ largest classes include seventh grade (76 students), first grade (63) and second grade (57). The smallest class is currently grade four at 40 students. Elk City (grades K-8) dropped its numbers again and has just 12 students this year, down from 19 and 24 the previous two years, respectively. Clearwater Valley Junior/Senior High School (grades 6-12) had 184 students last year and is up to 190 this school year, having had 199 in 2011-12. The school’s largest class is the freshman class with 42 students. Clearwater Valley Elementary School in Kooskia has 178 students this year compared to 168 last school year and 167 the previous year. The largest class is grade three with 34 kids. Grangeville High School (9-12) is down by 17 students from 277 last year to 260 this school year. There were 278 students in 2011-12.
Both GHS’s sophomore and senior classes have 71 students while the freshman class has 57 and the junior class has 61.
Cottonwood Joint School District 242
Cottonwood’s Joint School District 242, grades kindergarten through 12, saw an 11-student decrease in population from 400 last year to 389 this year.
Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School, Grangeville
Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School had 84 students last year and is at 83 this year, preschool through grade eight. In 2012-13 it saw 61 students and 77 in 2010. The total population includes the biggest classes of 15 in preschool and 10 each in second and seventh grades.
Summit Academy, Cottonwood
Summit Academy has 71 students this year, up from 61 the previous year. The school has students in grades preschool through twelfth.
Salmon River Joint School District 244, Riggins
Salmon River Joint School District 243 had a total of 116 students this year, as compared to 123 students last school year and 129 the previous year with 140 the year prior to that. There are 65 students at Salmon River Junior Senior High School in grades seven through 12 and 51 at Riggins Elementary School in grades kindergarten through sixth.
