LEWISTON - The seeding order for the May 9-10 district tournament at the University of Idaho was partially set in league matches last Saturday, April 12. Grangeville's girls doubles tandem of Katrina Frei and Catherine Rockwell lost one match but "came back to play very well in their second match," GHS coach Kerry McCulley said. The Frei-Rockwell freshman duo beat their Coeur d'Alene Charter counterparts 8-0 in the late match, having fallen to the same girls 8-2 earlier in the day. Seniors Yowzer Rockwell and Jenni Forsmann easily won their first set against Charter's top pair, but struggled in the second set before rallying back from one down at 5-6 to tie the set. Rockwell-Forsmann won the tie break, 7-4, to carry the match.
Grangeville also took two out of three mixed doubles matches from Clark Fork Saturday.
In non-league match play earlier in the week against the Lewiston JV, Grangeville split the matches on the strength of boys singles wins by Garrett Kennedy over Denver Drake and Fernando Reigosa over Switzer. Kennedy pulled away from a 2-2 tie after Drake was unable win his serve. Rachel Kelley-Maicee Conner and a Forsmann-Catherine Rockwell combo won girls doubles matches. Taylor Wilkins beat her counterpart in girls singles.
The GHS tennis squad played after the print deadline Tuesday night.
Up next, the tennis team is having a car wash 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 19, at Les Schwab to help fund new uniforms. Grangeville will return to the courts next Monday at Clarkston and Tuesday, 3:30 p.m., against Clearwater Valley at GHS.
