U of I farm and ranch business succession planning class scheduled

LEWISTON -- University of Idaho Extension will present “Keeping the Legacy Alive: Working Together for a Better Future” beginning Monday, March 17, in Lewiston. This is the only time this course for area farmers and ranchers will be offered in 2014.

U of I Extension, in cooperation with the Idaho Barley Commission and the Western Center for Risk Management Education, will sponsor the workshop.

This will be offered in Lewiston March 17, 18, and 20. Dave Specht, certified financial planner and owner of The Family Businessman, is a nationally known consultant and planner. He will address “The Continuity Quotient” and owner and management transitions. Pete Volk, Attorney-at-Law, a popular speaker from the first “Keeping the Legacy Alive” series, will talk about business structures and legal strategies for success. Ken Hart, University of Idaho Extension, and Josh Huff, NW Farm Credit, will cover financing, retirement, financial planning and management transfer. Farmers, ranchers and their families will be encouraged and build skills to start to improve their farm business transition plans.

These workshops are funded by a grant from the Western Center for Risk Management Education/USDA/NIFA, in cooperation with the Idaho Barley Commission. The entire series is available for $25 per person, or $45 farmer/rancher unit (two to four persons). Families and multiple generations are encouraged to attend. Classes will run each day from 1 – 5 p.m. at the Red Lion Hotel.

Pre-registration for “Keeping the Legacy Alive” class is required as seating is limited to 50 participants. Registration needs to be completed by March 10.
