OROFINO — Bulldogs ace Jasper Sabatino delivered an exceptional start for Grangeville in a critical situation last Monday night, May 5.
To force a rematch with an Orofino squad that has handled the Bulldogs by the collar in three games this season, Sabatino struck out 13 to secure a 3-0 win over St. Maries.
Chopping down nearly two Lumberjacks per inning prevented defensive mishaps from turning into unearned runs; Orofino scored four unearned runs off of Grangeville’s mistakes during a 5-2 Maniacs win earlier in the week.
Grangeville tagged eight hits against St. Maries starter Casey Nelson and scored three runs in support of Sabatino’s premium pitching performance.
Austin Parks, Alex Koberstein, Sabatino, Shane Wood, Michael Wilson, Marcus Towerton and Jack Lawrence all produced hits, with Koberstein banging three singles and Wood thumping a double. Wilson batted in two of Grangeville’s runs.

JULIAETTA — Though short-handed, Grangeville 10-runned Kendrick twice in 11 innings of double-header action last Tuesday, April 29.
With the battery of Jasper Sabatino and Alex Koberstein starting one game apiece on the mound and one apiece behind the plate, the Bulldogs held the Tigers to a total of five runs for the day while piling up 11 in the first game and 15 in the second.
Shane Wood cracked a double and a home run; as a whole, Grangeville thundered out five extra-base hits, including triples by Sabatino and Layton Harris and a double by Michael Wilson.
Coming — A state tournament berth lies beyond each of the three doors Grangeville (11-6) could have opened after the print deadline last Tuesday.
The winner of the Grangeville-Orofino game would carry the district’s top seed into the state tournament. The loser would play in the district’s consolation game; the consolation game winner gets a state berth; the consolation loser advances to the Saturday, May 10, play-in.
