Lester: knows how the city works; someone with experience

Letters to the Editor

The election of mayor and council is very important to the citizens of Grangeville.

We need to put some thought in who will be handling the taxpayers’ monies and decisions of our town.

We need persons who are aware of the budget process of a government agency, have been exposed to the ins and outs of running a municipality. Wes Lester has been on the council for 20-plus years and has the experience needed for the job of mayor.

I have heard people saying we need someone new who hasn’t been exposed to the old way. The exposure is what we need in a mayor. The mayor does not have a vote on motions or measures unless there is a tie. He is responsible for guidance and help when needed by the council members. It is very critical that the city keep the funds for each department for the purpose they are intended and to make sure we have reserves for emergencies.

Yes, anyone can learn what makes a city government run, but it takes a long period of time to cover everything. I was on the council for 20 years, and it does take a full year just to get through one cycle and more than that to learn and understand the budget with all the line items.

Wes is aware of the working of the city. This does not mean that he will have the same positions or ideas as previous mayors. New visions can be created and strived for by Wes.

We need someone with experience in the position of mayor. Please vote for Wes Lester. Wes is truly qualified for this position and will do us a great service.
