Burns planned through October in Elk City region

The Forest Service will be conducting prescribed fires along FS roads 1183, 1189, 9524, 9519 and Spur Road off the main road system in the Blanco area between Oct. 8-31.

Studded tires legal beginning Oct. 1

Drivers can use studded tires on Idaho roadways beginning today, Oct. 1, according to the Idaho Transportation Department. Idaho state law allows the use of studded tires Oct. 1 - April 30 each year.

The Idaho Department of Lands (IDL) is reminding citizens that fire safety burn permits are required through Oct. 20. The permits can be obtained online at http://www.burnpermits.idaho.gov.

State sells timber sale

The Idaho Department of Lands sold a timber sale on Friday, Sept. 19, at Kamiah. North Suttler, located 14 miles northeast of Kooskia, was sold to IFG Timber LLC. The estimated 1,865 MBF was sold for an average price of $273 per M. Proceeds will benefit the State Hospital South endowment.

Forest Service public meeting is Oct. 18 on Forest Plan Revision

The Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests will hold a meeting for collaborators on Oct. 18 on the proposed action for Forest Plan Revision.

Road work: Expect winter log truck traffic during Iron Mountain Timber Sale

The Moose Creek Ranger District of the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests has begun logging and timber hauling operations on the Iron Mountain Stewardship Project, which is located north of Elk City near Iron Mountain.

Road work: Rapid River trail bridge closures start Sept. 28

Starting Sept. 28, work will begin on Rapid River Trail bridges. Two bridges will receive new decking material, running planks, and handrails due to weathering and old age.

Road work: Colt Creek Road closed due to Fern Salvage Timber Sale activity

The Powell Ranger District of the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests has begun logging and timber hauling operations on the Fern Salvage Timber Sale, which is located southeast of Powell Ranger Station on the Colt Creek Road 59.

Kamiah man sentenced for assaulting deputy

Paul Lee Oatman, 33, of Kamiah, was sentenced Monday, Sept. 15, to 36 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release for assault resulting in serious bodily injury. U.S. District Judge Edward J. Lodge also ordered Oatman to pay $25,719 in restitution and serve 100 hours of community service. He was found guilty by a jury on June 26, 2014.

Peasley Creek Road 469 open to forest visitors

Peasley Creek Road No. 469, a popular access road for hunters and other forest visitors, was reopened Aug. 26 after being closed for 10 years for safety reasons. The Peasley Creek Road Project is located approximately 15 air miles southeast of Grangeville.

Idaho County ag producers qualify for disaster assistance

Due to designation in a neighboring jurisdiction, Idaho County farmers and ranchers qualify for USDA natural disaster assistance.

Advocate to be in Grangeville Sept. 16

The Idaho Division of Veteran Services will have a veteran’s advocate in Grangeville on Tuesday, Sept. 16, at the Idaho Department of Labor, 305 N. State St., Grangeville, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (breaking for lunch at noon).
